the tooth fairy

Mac has lost approximately 67 teeth in the last however many years since he started losing teeth. I think he has about 4 more to go before he's lost all the teeth that he's supposed to lose.

In all the visits we've had from the tooth fairy, we've never known what color his tooth fairy is.

Am I the only mother in the Western Hemisphere who didn't know the tooth fairy was supposed to leave a telltale trace of his/her color after each visit?

A friend of Mac's explained a few weeks ago that if you leave a cup of water by your bedside on the night you leave the tooth under your pillow, the tooth fairy will dip his/her wing in the cup, thereby leaving a trace of his/her color from the wing so that you will know what color your fairy is.

Who knew?  Tell me I'm not alone on this.

Unfortunately, I didn't know about this so the first approximately 65 teeth lost resulted in a tooth fairy visit but no color indication. And then when we were in San Andres a few weeks ago, Mac lost a tooth and proceeded to set out a cup of water by the tooth.  When I asked why, he explained the whole wing-dipping exercise.

I know you'll be pleased to know that Mac's tooth fairy is red. He (Mac is very sure it's a male fairy) left some red wing color behind. It was a little weak, like maybe it was from jam that got diluted in water, but we think the salt air might have weakened his color a bit. Mac lost another tooth last night and again, the tooth fairy dipped his wing and left red behind. Now that we're out of the salt air, the red was a bit stronger.

We're all sleeping better with the mystery of our tooth fairy's color solved...
